Reeth Amblers – Walking The Gower Peninsula

The UK's first area of outstanding natural beauty
From £669/ per person

Looking for walking holidays in Wales? The Gower Peninsula designated as the UK’s first “area of outstanding natural beauty” is home to around 50 unspoilt beaches, coves and bays. From the jaw‐dropping vastness of villages Rhossili, to the tiny, secluded Pwll Du. Inland you’ll find sheltered woodland and rolling grasslands; country pubs and fine food. This diversity makes the Gower ideal for exploring by foot and with nearly 400 miles’ worth of rights of way it is a walker’s paradise. Both of our carefully chosen fully guided walks will showcase highlights of the peninsula and will include “Three Cliffs Bay”. This is where you can decide if you agree with renowned Welsh classical singer Katherine Jenkins judgement; that it is the most beautiful view in Britain, as well as Rhossili bay and the nearby outcrop of Worms Head – made famous by the poet Dylan Thomas.

HOLIDAY ITINERARY

DAY ONE: Arrival day

Make your own way to The Diplomat, restaurant & spa hotel  for five nights half board accommodation.

DAY TWO: Walk 1

Depart the hotel for the fifty-minute transfer to the start of the walk at Pilton Green. You meet the coastline at Paviland where, if it is low tide, you can see the cave in which the remains of a 32,000 year old “Red Lady” was discovered.  Continuing westwards, past Iron Age fortifications, always keeping the coastline with its magnificent seascapes to the left, you soon reach Mewslade and Fall Bay’s, both far enough from the main roads to keep them peaceful for sun lovers and bathers alike. Around a headland, you catch your first glimpse of the iconic Worm’s Head. Isolated from the mainland twice a day at high tide, the island is only accessible via a rocky causeway. Finally, you pass a Lifeguard station before proceeding towards one of the top ten beaches in the world, at Rhossili and time for a well-deserved “cuppa”.  6 miles, 90m total ascent/descent.

DAY THREE: Walk 2

Depart the hotel for the thirty-minute transfer to Moorlakes Wood with its verdant canopy.  You head towards Ilston Church with its beautiful interior and stained glass windows. Continuing, you visit the remains of the oldest Baptist Chapel in Wales, then onwards  towards Pennard Castle and the village that vanished beneath sand dunes, following a cataclysmic storm. At the halfway point, there is the Gower Inn. Here you can decide if you wish to continue to Three Cliffs Bay. If you decide not to continue, you can wait at the Gower Inn until the rest of the party returns.  If you are continuing it is onwards again, this time to the wonderful Three Cliffs Bay, site of many a TV advert. Whether you take the descent to the beach or prefer to take in the views from the higher ground, you will be astounded by the elegance and beauty of this amazing seascape.  The walk ends back at the Gower Inn, an ideal spot to sit for a pint of real ale or a glass of wine, while you ponder over your walk through Britain’s first “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”.  6 miles, 90m total ascent.
