Discover our walking holiday in Provence

Arles is a city on the Rhône River in the Provence region of southern France. It’s famed for inspiring the paintings of Van Gogh, which influenced the contemporary art displayed at the Foundation Vincent Van Gogh. Once a provincial capital of ancient Rome, Arles is also known for many remains from that era, including Arles Amphitheatre (les Arènes d’Arles), now hosting plays, concerts and bull fights, the Theatre Antique, Constantine’s Baths and the Alyscamps. You can do this very easily on foot, as Arles is a compact medieval city, your walking guide will introduce you to the main sights on your included walking tour, along with the Provencal cafes and restaurants! At the Musee de l’Arles Antique you can see the bust of Julius Caesar that was fished out of the Rhone in 2008, and reconstructions of the city in Roman times in some detail. You will also be able to see how they shaded the amphitheatre with sailcloth, and how the floating bridge was built over the Rhone. During your week away your walking guide will introduce you to La Camargue, Les Alpilles and the quaint charm of small-town France.

The Camargue, with its white horses, black bulls, and pink flamingos, home to more than 400 species of birds, has been identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International, it is classed as one of the top sites in Europe for bird watching, its brine ponds provide one of the few European habitats for the greater flamingo.

Just to the north, the jagged, limestone peaks of the Alpilles mountains are a striking contrast to the vast wetlands of the Camargue. You will visit some of the most picturesque areas in Provence within the Alpilles villages; The prestigious medieval city of Les-Baux-de-Provence, perched on a rocky spur overlooking sumptuous thousand-year-old sceneries planted with vines and olive trees, belongs to the select circle of the Most Beautiful Villages (“Plus Beaux Villages”) in France. It’s pretty cobble-stoned alleyways, lined with Renaissance mansions, run all the way to the castle esplanade. The village has 22 listed architectural treasures classified as historic monuments. Among them the fortress, a unique testimony to the rich and tumultuous history of the Les-Baux-de-Provence in the Middle Ages. Its wide-reaching cultural and patrimonial identity are known throughout the world, hence its nickname “the Lighthouse of Provence”. A major cultural and historic spot, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence englobes all the charm of the Provençal way of life, thus attracting numerous celebrities and anonymous people seeking to recharge their batteries. Wander along the shady boulevards or in the narrow streets of the historic centre, its squares each embellished with a fountain. Discover charming boutiques and art galleries, refresh yourself with a drink and savour sun-drenched cuisine featuring local and regional products.

Your final walk from Saint-Gilles to Vauvert offers a delightful blend of historical landmarks, serene rural paths, and the charm of small-town France. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, this walk is sure to leave a lasting impression. Enjoy the tranquility and beauty of Occitanie as you embark on this unforgettable adventure.
