Day Two Walking tour of Arles

Walking tour of the city which will acquaint you with all the major sights and attractions of this splendid city – Place du Forum, Espace van Gogh, amphitheatre and theatre, the Roman baths and the Musée Réattu on the bank of the river Rhône. Arles’ golden age began under Caesar when it became an important regional capital of the Roman Empire. Evidence of this is everywhere, but brazenly obvious at ‘les Arènes’ – the wonderfully preserved amphitheatre, which is now used for bull fights. The special light in Provence has always attracted painters and Arles will be forever associated with Vincent van Gogh and his spat with Gaugin, severing his ear. You can follow a walking trail in Arles featuring van Gogh paintings such as the Amphitheatre, Café terrace at night and Starry night over the Rhone. The rest of the day is free.

Day Three Free Day

Free day in resort to explore the local area at your leisure or relax.

Day Four Included excursion of the Camargue

The day starts with a short coach transfer through the Camargue to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. On the way you’ll hear the story of the Three Marys (Jacob, Salome and Magdalene) and their servant Sarah, patron saint of Gypsies, thousands of whom have been making the annual pilgrimage to Stes-Maries for centuries. A boat cruise on the Petit Rhone will show you aspects of the Camargue and its wildlife only accessible by river. After an included lunch (fixed menu) in Stes-Maries you continue west across the Camargue to Aigues-Mortes, where the immense city walls still protect the medieval city within. After a tour you return to Arles.

Day Five Optional excursion to St Remy, Les Baux & the Carrieres de Lumieres

Free day in Arles or you can join an optional to St Remy, Les Baux & the Carrieres de Lumieres

Depart the hotel to St Paul-de-Mausole (just 20 miles away) where van Gogh painted a series of masterpieces while a voluntary patient in the clinic there. After your visit you have some free time in the Provençal town of St Remy before continuing to the spectacular hilltop village of Les-Baux-de-Provence where you have free time to visit and for lunch. In the afternoon you have entrance to the extraordinary artistic sound and light show of the Carrières de Lumières in the Les Baux underground limestone quarry. The quarry was first used as an artistic space by Jean Cocteau for a film set in 1959. The current ‘shows’ started in 2012 and take place in the huge Dante gallery 60m inside the mountain. 100 synchronised video projectors flood a surface area of more than 6,000 m² with images and the ground is completely covered, too. You will return to the hotel in the late afternoon

On arrival in Avignon you have a one hour walking tour followed by free time to enjoy the sites before continuing to the Pont du Gard where you will have time to visit the museum and the famous site which was part of the 50km Roman aqueduct built to carry water to Nîmes. On your return to Arles, you call in at Nîmes where you stroll with your Tour Director from the Maison Carrée Roman temple, through the old town passing by the amphitheatre to meet your coach for the return to Arles, arriving at late afternoon.
