Walking in hot weather – Tips on how to stay safe

What should I wear when walking in hot weather? This is a question we get asked from time to time, so we have compiled our top 5 tips to help you this summer. If you have any top tips for walking in the heat, please share them with us in the comments or via our social media channels.

Our top 5 tips for walking in the warmer weather:

  1. When to walk
  2. Take plenty of water
  3. Stay protected from the sun
  4. Wear the right clothing for walking
  5. Have the right footwear for walking/hiking

Don’t walk in the hottest parts of the day.

Generally the hottest part of the day is around midday so try to avoid walking in the height of the sun from around 11am through to 3pm. Take advantage of the longer days. Walking in the morning and the evening will be a lot cooler.

Stay hydrated

Regardless of the hot weather, you should always take liquids with you on a walk. Water is the healthiest option as it contains no calories or sugar. It’s also a great way to stay hydrated for longer.

If you are looking for something a little more refreshing you could try infusing your water with fruits. Citrus fruits such as lemon and lime are a great choice. You can read more about keeping hydrated via the NHS website here .

No added sugar squash cordial is ok in small amounts, as long as it is part of a balanced diet. Try to avoid caffeine as this produces urine at a quicker rate and you don’t want to get caught short.

Protect yourself from the sun

It goes without saying but make sure you apply sunscreen before you set off and top it up as needed.

Clothing

Looser fitting clothes that are lightweight and won’t stick when you perspire. Invest in a decent cap or sunhat and a pair of sunglasses to keep your head in the shade, as this is the most vulnerable part of the body that isn’t normally covered up. As the scouts say, always be prepared! Pack an additional layer and lightweight rain jacket, as the weather can change very suddenly, especially if you are walking at a different altitude.

Footwear

Footwear is very important when going for a hike or walk in the summer and this depends greatly on where you are planning to walk and the conditions of the ground.

In most cases a lightweight mesh walking/hiking boot that is both breathable (does not have a waterproof barrier) and has optimum support to tackle rough terrain is ideal. This will allow your feet to breathe and be cooler.

Avoid full leather boots during the warmer months, as they are designed to create a waterproof barrier and will not provide the circulation of air that your feet need in the warmer weather.

Lastly, ensure that you have a decent pair of socks. Socks are just as important as shoes/boots in that they look after your feet. Thin wool socks are ideal for summer, they offer a great amount of breathability, take away excess sweat from the skin and are great at releasing moisture. If you are planning on a particularly long hike use two pairs of wool socks or a slightly thicker pair on their own for added comfort.

Remember even on overcast days the sun can be powerful enough to damage the skin and cause heat exhaustion, so please always be aware and prepared.
