Julio loves the great outdoors and is always on the look out for a new adventure.
Q: Where is your favourite place to walk and why?
Julio: Difficult to answer, so many places are spectacular to me, Mallorca is one of them for its amazing combination of seas and mountains. The Alps is also one of my favourites due the large tradition of mountaineering.
Q: How long have you been a walking guide?
Julio: Now more than 12 years in this business.
Q: What food would you recommend to take on a walk?
Julio: A good sandwich, fruit and some nuts are really helpful, they are long term energy and extremely healthy.
Q: How far do you normally walk in a week?
Julio: Some weeks, I walk every day for about 15 km per day so about 110 km in total.
Q: Do you use any specialist equipment?
Julio: As a guide quite a lot, such as GPS, Altimeter, Walkies, small rope 7.8 mm of 30 mtr, first aid kit, some carabines, head lamp, small general repairing kit some culture explanations material, books of flora and fauna, and more.
Q: How fit do you need to be to go on our walking holiday?
Julio: Of course, we need a minimum physical condition for hiking and some agility, sometimes the paths in the mountains are tricky and present some difficult sections, if we get tired too easy or fast our faculties and skills or concentration capacity get worst and less, increasing the possibilities of an accident or mistakes. Normally we recommend that the participants could walk or do more than they’re expecting to do, always stay over the general level of the itinerary.
Q: Do you walk in all weathers?
Julio: Yes, weather in the mountain is not always like we expect and can change easily and fast. The point is always have an alternative or plan B in case that the weather be so bad and extreme. It isn’t a good idea to hike on the top of a ridge with strong winds or thunderstorms, in that case we need to adapt the walk or find an alternative path, like descending immediately avoiding the objective danger of the weather, that in that case is wind or storms.
Q: What to wear on a walking holiday?
Julio: Depends of the season and place of course, but there are some general ideas. Clothing according to the zone and weather and good quality clothing, especially if the weather is severe and extreme, back pack with the correct size ( If we return to the same hotel every night or we do from hut to hut), personal medicines and some first aid kit, reparation kit, headlamp, walking sticks, proper shoes and other ones, maps, altimeter, GPS, water recipient.
Q: What one item should you always pack for a walking holiday? (Not walking boots)
Julio: Difficult to answer, but I think map and compass is always useful.
Q: Where was the last place you went on holiday?
Julio: The French alps, in Chamonix, the valley of mountaineering and adventures. Amazing for all Mountains lovers, doing the crossing Chamonix Zermatt.
