Q: Where is your favourite place to walk and why?
Emma: La Taha in Las Alpujarra’s in Spring when all the blossom trees are out and there’s still snow in the high mountains..
Q: How long have you been a walking guide?
Emma: I’ve been at Walking guide for over 7 years now
Q: How did you become a walking guide?
Emma: Walking is a passion shared by my whole family. My Dad started guiding walking tours over 20 years ago. I started guiding when he was looking to semi retire. The mountains have always been a huge part of the family, from my Grandad walking all the Wainwrights to Dad having 24 Mont Blanc seasons. I haven’t looked back since.
Q: What food would you recommend to take on a walk?
Emma: Energy/nut bars or something with slow releasing energy, nuts are good protein too which help your muscles.
Q: What is the standout highlight of your walking destination?
Emma: The traditional villages of Las Alpaujarras are unique in their own right, the white villages, the local food, the people and the nature is in abundance from Golden Eagles and Bee Eaters to the mountain Ibex and flora, right down to the insects and butterflies. Lanjaron for example still offer free tapas with every beer/wine purchased!
Q: How far do you normally walk in a week?
Emma: Anywhere between 20 – 80km depending on what trips/training I have planned.
Q:What kind of terrain can walkers expect?
Emma: The Alpujarras are certainly not know for easy walking, but neither is it difficult. There’s some narrow style paths next to acequias (waterways built by the Moors), to old mules tracks and stoned walkways through villages. For those used to walking in the UK hills, you will have no problem.
Q: Do you use any specialist equipment?
Emma: Not really but I do love my poles, they are great for balance and pacing but also help your joints, especially on the downhill sections.
Q: What level of fitness do you require to walk on this holiday?
Emma: A medium level of fitness, again someone who is used to hill walking in the UK would be fine with the level of fitness needed for these walks.
A: Do you walk in all weathers?
Emma: Yes of course! The only time we call walks off would be either because of storms but they are few and far between.
Q: What to wear on a walking holiday?
Emma: I’d recommended the following kit during the summer months.
Q: What one item should you always pack for a walking holiday? (Not walking boots)
Emma: Sun cream, always sun cream here!
Q: Where was the last place you went on holiday?
Emma: Iceland to visit the Sólheimajökulll glacier.
